    Comments:

The setup for this is only slightly more difficult than the wahoo kickr, but that is where my preference for the kickr ends. Side by side the noise difference between the kickr and hammer is nearly indistinguishable, but the interesting thing is that the hammer doesn't seem to vibrate the floor beneath it as much as the kickr. I could run this unit upstairs in the morning and (probably) not wake up anyone else in the house. The road feeling on the hammer is superior to the kickr as well. With the kickr if you stop pedaling during an interval it feels like you have to sprint in order to get the flywheel moving again. The hammer smoothly brings you back to the target wattage. And lastly (for this review) the hammer just feels more solid than the kickr. I'm not afraid to get out of the saddle and push some big watts while in the hammer. The kickr on the other hand feels a bit more flimsy. Really happy with this purchase.

My first smart trainer and chose the Hammer over the Kickr based on reviews of both. It's pretty quiet, but I don't live in an apartment, so it's not and issue. I've read the Kickr can be loud. The set up is easy and found that it "likes" the ANT+ connection better that Bluetooth when it comes to my PC. Just my experience. It talked to my iPad via Bluetooth without a problem. The road feel is pretty good, but there is no such thing a coasting downhill! The resistance eases up, but you still have to pedal. Just the way it is. It comes with a bunch of training profiles and video rides. Just rode around a section of Iceland the other day. Pretty cool. I'll follow up with more as I ride it more. My primary reason for buying it was to do hill work and intervals.

            Comments:

Having now owned this for the last 3 months, this product has brought my training and fitness to a new level. I've been a Zwift rider for well over a year and was using a fluid trainer, but this product has breathed new life into the virtual riding experience. I have it paired with ANT+ to my laptop and there are no initial connection issues. However, as 1 other reviewer noted, there are unpredictable times when connectivity is lost, all power lights turn off, and all resistance disappears. After 30 secs of soft pedaling, the machine turns back on, and reconnects to my Zwift program, but there are no changes in the resistance as one pedals through the course. The "Smart Trainer" becomes "dumb." I've experienced a burn smell at times from the unit, and abnormal mechanical noises as well. I'd say that the unit functions as it should 95% of the time. Lastly, I've detected slippage when under very heavy, slow cadence pedaling. My original unit has now been shipped back to CycleOps for an exchange. The support team was very good. I am disappointed that the only way to wireless update the firmware is with an IPad, which I fortunately own. It should be upgradable using any platform. This is a glaring deficiency that should be addressed. The instruction manual needs better clarity regarding the name of the app that is used to do the firmware. Again, the support team was helpful.

              Comments:

I am married, father of 2 young kids, and often travel for work making my time at home even more important. I really enjoy racing Mt. Bikes in the summer and Cyclocross in the fall. To stay in shape for racing with my busy schedule I purchased a traditional Cycleops Fluid trainer years ago, although the Fluid was a high quality unit I really struggled to stay engaged after about 30 minutes. I sold it because I found it a struggle to really use it. For the past year I've had a number of people tell me about virtual training. I tried a few classes using the Wahoo Kickr and virtual software and really liked the experience and found that an hour can go by quickly. When looking to purchase my own unit I remembered the quality of the Fluid trainer so decided to take a chance on the Hammer. I was impressed at how fast I got set up with Virtual Trainer, connected my iPad, Cadence sensor, and Heart rate monitor and started training. I mostly enjoy the riding the video rides of famous routes. The road feel is good and the unit is quite. My only complaint so far is not about the Hammer Unit itself, but ore the Virtual Trainer software. There are plenty of free ride roads to go on with video / GPS file synced. For training I prefer to do the structured workouts where the Hammer forces you to ride a specific FTP zone. I wish there were more video enabled training programs to keep me engaged for the 60-120 minutes.

The Hammer was easy to set up. Putting a cassette on was no problem, and a spacer was included for 9 and 10 speed set ups. Connecting to the computer was easy as well. No problems to get going. The Hammer worked well on Zwift and TrainerRoad. I would recommend the Hammer to my friends.

I've got about 60 hours on this thing in the last 3 months (brutal winter), and I can honestly say it's the best indoor riding system I've ever been on. I pair it primarily with Zwift and get a super "real world" feel on climbs, descente, etc. Crazy amount of resistance without slipping. Also super easy to set up and much quieter (no annoying tire squeaks) than anything I've ever used. Worth checking out for sure.
